About the Book:
In Race Fans’ Devotions to Go, Beth shares observations about drivers and racing as well as stories about her experiences at the track. Each of the 31 devotions illustrates the similarities between motorsports and life and ends with a “pit stop” – an idea to make your life more fulfilling.
1) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?
The most exciting thing for me is when someone likes one of my books. I love hearing from kids who read my children's books. Getting a little note from a child or seeing their faces light up when they read the book - that warms my heart.
Another fun thing (which relates to the book we're giving away) is being at a NASCAR race and hearing the engines roar to life. If you've ever heard stock car engines up close, it is unbelievably loud and exhilarating. I love it!
2) If you weren’t a writer, what job would you love to try out?
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a vet, but I'm allergic to cats, so that didn't work out. Being a large animal vet might be interesting though - treating horses, cattle, and maybe zoo animals.
3) How did you become a NASCAR fan? What is it about racing that you like?
When my sons were little, they loved toy cars with the NASCAR paint schemes, so we started watching races on TV. They enjoyed the races, but frankly, I was completely hooked! In Race Fans' Devotions to Go I tell about the first race we ever watched, the 2001 Daytona 500. Real race fans will instantly know the significance of that race.
Like most racing fans, I love the excitement, the colors and the speed! I also love NASCAR because it is family friendly. The opening ceremony for each race includes a prayer, usually asking for God's protection on the participants. My faith is of the utmost importance to me, as it is to many of the drivers and their wives. I love that racing ministries, such as Motor Racing Outreach, are present at races to minister to the needs of drivers, their families and fans.
4) What kind of research did you have to do to bring this book to life on the page?
Over the years, I've learned so much about racing. But in preparation for writing the book, I took notes through one whole NASCAR season, jotting down anything I thought was significant. I attended NASCAR races - that was FUN research. I also read up on some of the nitty-gritty racing information to make sure it was correct. To be doubly sure, I found a stock car driver who was kind enought to read the manuscript to check it for accuracy of the racing details.
5) What do you do in your spare time when you're not writing?
Taking care of my family and writing take up most of my time. But I also enjoy reading, baking and watching football games and NASCAR races. This is my fifth year doing a fantasty NASCAR league. That adds a different dimension to watching a race. Not only do I cheer for my favorite driver, Kasey Kahne, but I hope the four drivers I activated for the race will run well, too.
